I became a member of a traditional denomination in 1989. Sometime in the early 90s, we had Sunday evening services, held in the then “new” wing, about 13 years old that time. These would finish around 9pm or later, depending on the preacher. A friend and I were regulars.
One Sunday, after the evening service had finished, my friend was walking down the stairs towards the main road, I following behind, when she suddenly exclaimed: “Something touched my leg!” We stopped and instinctively looked to the right where there was a cluster of green plants, about waist high. The bushes were moving in a deliberate manner as if something was pushing past, except that “something” couldn’t be seen.
I wondered about that intrusion:
- What was that?
- As Christians, we know there’s a boundary between the seen and unseen world, which is not to be crossed. But something crossed it anyway.
- Third, why was my friend vulnerable to it?
Today’s question brought back a minor incident which I thought I had forgotten. I guess it’s still filed somewhere in the back of my mind, in the “Mystery” drawer, where I had put it 30 years ago.
I have a mystery drawer too. And, though I have never seen angels or demons (that I’m aware of), I have felt their presence.

I had a few strange experiences as a kid, just noted them and filed them at the back of my mind. Then when I encountered Jesus and read the New Testament, I found that He was strengthened by angels, but also encountered demons and got rid of them. Then I realised that ever since childhood, I had encountered both angels and demons (not everyday! just a handful of occasions) but there was no teaching about them.
As a new Christian, I learned how to get rid of demons by reading aloud certain psalms in the bible. Proclamation of God’s Word increases the presence of Light, and darkness backs off. God is always with you, so there’s no need to be afraid.

This is such helpful information, Kathlyn. It could be another post in itself! I, too, have learned how to resist demons and tell them to leave me alone. A pastor once told me a way to do this called the 3 R’s: Repent, Rejoice, Rebuke. It works like this: When I feel tempted or troubled by evil spirits the first thing I do is say a prayer to God—repenting of my sins. Next, I praise the name of Jesus out loud. Finally, I tell the demons to leave me alone. Usually nothing dramatic happens, but I soon realize the temptation or harassment is gone.
Thank you for talking about spiritual warfare, a much neglected and misunderstood part of the Christian life. To some believers it sounds too mystical, but the battle between unseen powers of good and evil is all too real.
